History of the Museum
The Van Derlyn Gallery was established in 1998 by Dr. Anneliese de Vries, a renowned art historian and curator with a lifelong passion for Dutch art. Dr. de Vries envisioned a gallery that would not only showcase the works of Vincent van Gogh but also provide a comprehensive overview of Dutch art history, from the Golden Age to the modern era. Inspired by the artistic spirit of Amsterdam and the city's rich cultural heritage, she set out to create a space where art could be celebrated, studied, and shared with the world.
Initially located in a smaller building on the Keizersgracht canal, the Van Derlyn Gallery quickly gained recognition for its exceptional collection and engaging exhibitions. In 2005, the gallery moved to its current location on the Prinsengracht canal, a beautifully restored 17th-century canal house that provides a fitting backdrop for the masterpieces on display. The building's historic charm and elegant architecture create a unique and immersive experience for visitors, transporting them back in time to the Golden Age of Dutch art.
Over the years, the Van Derlyn Gallery has hosted numerous groundbreaking exhibitions, featuring works by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other prominent Dutch artists. The gallery has also developed a reputation for its innovative educational programs, which cater to a wide range of audiences, from school children to university students to lifelong learners. Today, the Van Derlyn Gallery stands as a leading art institution in Amsterdam, attracting visitors from around the globe and contributing to the city's vibrant cultural scene.
